Meet The Characters
Levin Trent
Levin is our youngest POV character by far at 19yo, but what he lacks in experience, he more than makes up for with tenacity, a quick mind, and sheer grit. Levin saved a crow’s life when he was younger, and in thanks, she offered him her first chick to always look after him. Who watches over who is hard to determine!
He’s spend his entire childhood getting in and out of trouble, and is on his final warning to make something of his life. The capital city has many distractions and temptations, however, and despite his good intentions he always seems to find a way of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
When he spots a man who seems to be god-touched, the next mess Levin finds himself tangled up in might just be his last…
Levin is written for all those who keep a bright flame lit even in the darkest places. For those who see the good and best in people, who know there are two sides to every story, and bad actions do not make bad people.

Sloan Blackthorn
Sloan Blackthorn is a dragonrider legend. Reapers are the most powerful of all dragons and rightly named god-killers, but they also claim the life of their rider. Blackthorn defied that fate, and lives out his early retirement in a remote spit of land guarded by hogs more bristly than he is.
Unfortunately, when the remnants of a god is found on his land, Blackthorn’s worst fears come true - that the war he fought so hard in was for nothing. The Empress Katrikana still owns his life, and he’s pulled back into a world he hoped never to return to.
The thing is, when you’ve been hidden away from it for so long, the world can change.

Diandra Khose
Diandra is another of our multi-POV cast, and my “disaster lady” who has been through the ringer and still keeps going.
She’s unbelievably resilient, hasn’t lost her sense of humour, and never gives up - even when things go completely sideways.
And in a world where gods roam freely, things can go very sideways indeed.
Dia is written for all those intelligent, mature for their age, quirky little girls who grew up thinking they were broken or needed to be fixed on a fundamental level.
Whose struggles went unnoticed because they weren’t “difficult,” but in reality they were making themselves smaller, lesser, and never wanted to be a burden.
Who were considered rude or aloof as they aged, when they were just trying to fit in, but desperate to not be too much (while terrified they were not enough). Who tried to be “better” when their existence was already perfect.
Maybe they had abusive or neglectful childhoods. Maybe they were neurodivergent.
Maybe both.
Alessia Sahela
Our fiercest POV character, Alessia goes by many titles and has many abilities that keep her the focus of any place she walks into.
One of the most powerful mages in the world, Alessia is bound to the service of the Raven King, on a quest to free her master or lose her soul and essence to a place beyond death.
She is an enemy of Empress Katrikana of Valaisia, whose Reaper dragons have killed gods, but Alessia is adept at finding - and exploiting - the weaknesses of everything she encounters and turning situations to her advantage. And the Empress’s daughter, a girl-mage, whose magic has recently manifested - bringing in a new age - is an obvious weakness.
Alessia is written for all the women who are done.
Who want to give a “fuck you” to a world that breaks good people and are angry at the powers-that-be for letting it happen.
Who want to burn it all down.
Kato Haskins
Our penultimate POV character, Kato Haskins is a competent and confident dragonrider whose unorthodox approaches to flying and aerial combat haven’t been seen since Sloan Blackthorn.
He and Therion work together to defend the skies above Valaisia, keeping the cities, towns, and homesteads safe against any encroaching threats; but his chance for true glory died with the last god.
Until god-magic unexpectedly appears, and the decisive war might not be over.
Kato is written for those who work themselves to the bone, only for others to see success. For those fighting a just war in an unjust system, whose actions are questioned, whose behaviours are judged, and who hold to their morals even when the world stops making sense.
For those who rely on themselves before anyone else, who are bitten once and twice shy, who do not give second chances once they see the truth.
Empress Katrikana Inore
The last POV character to introduce!
Katrikana Inore, the Dragon Empress, rules Valaisia alongside her mistresses and with the advice of her ageing father who started the god-war. Her daughter Varya’s powers manifested at six years old and ushered in a new age.
She is the penultimate step in her father’s plan of conquest, and has inherited the Flamekeepers to keep her growing empire in check. But how much control she truly wields is questionable, when she is surrounded by powers beyond reckoning.
Katrikana is written for all the women who do as they are told, are obedient, and have been made to believe this is the way to be worthy in the world. For those who see through the cracks of the stories they are told, but have nowhere to run.
Whose lives are ruled by others and are told to be grateful for what they have. Who were squeezed to fit in a box that was always too small for them, or the wrong shape for them. Who take what they can get and make the most of it.
Who make their own power.
